On Thursday, March 27, we invite young European designers in the afternoon to visit the six locations in Amersfoort and receive a detailed briefing on-site about the context and opportunities of each location.

Amersfoort is participating in Europan18 with six locations under the central local theme, “Encounters.” The theme focuses on “the use of existing buildings or spaces to create opportunities for encounters.” The concept of encounters is a key thread in the Amersfoort 2030-2040 Environmental Vision: Healthy Living Together. It is one of the pillars of the city’s core development strategies.

The international Theme for Europan 18 is “Re-sourcing.” At its core is the transformation of the living environment—both spatially and economically—with a strong awareness that all solutions must address climate challenges.

Europan has built a significant international tradition with recognized quality. The competition offers benefits on both sides: it provides young design firms the opportunity to realize projects while allowing municipalities, as clients and initiators, to bring in inspiration and high-quality ideas for their projects.

Flint – Reinvent the Theatre

How can we, reinvent the program for inward-facing theater building Flint into a inclusive multi-functional hub that fosters creativity, connection to the neighbourhood and urban vitality for all, a new urban destination for Amersfoort?

The City of Amersfoort is re-imagining urban life at Flint, transforming this currently inward- life at Flint, transforming this currently inward- facing building into an open, dynamic and locally integrated space a welcoming “central living room” for all. A space where individuals from diverse backgrounds individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together, fostering connections can come together, fostering connections through a wide range of cultural, social, and recreational activities.

This transformation prioritizes multi- functionality, adaptability and a meaningful relationship with its urban environment materially and socially. By aligning the building’s functionality with contemporary needs, Flint seeks to position itself as a landmark that stimulates creativity and encourages collaboration. Think of a new and strong program for this location that can contribute to a vibrant city and be a meeting place for a wide range of users and visitors.

Amicitia – Restore Urban Fabric

How can we, restore the underutilized Amicitia location into an iconic gateway to Amersfoort’s historic centre seamlessly blending housing, commercial, semi-cultural and green spaces to revitalize the urban fabric?

Amersfoort, in collaboration with the owner of Amicitia, is committed to revitalize and restore the urban fabric. This initiative aligns with the city’s vision of a cohesive inner-city experience through context-sensitive architectural design and integrated and connected green spaces.

Amicitia offers a unique chance to redefine urban living through an iconic housing project that serves as a gateway to Amersfoort’s historic city center. Project should creates a well-thought building by combining housing with commercial and/or semi-cultural spaces at the ground floor, fostering social interaction and community cohesion. The proposal should integrate sustainable urban renewal with economic feasibility, historical preservation, fostering and contributing to the overall livability of Amersfoort’s city center.

Otto Scheltus – Reconnect City

How can we, reconnect Otto Scheltusflat as an urban hotspot bridging the central station and historic centre, creating innovative residential typologies and dynamic public spaces to create an inclusive new city landmark?

The Otto Scheltusflat presents a key opportunity to reconnect and reshape its urban fabric recreating a new landmark and meeting place for the city. Situated at a vital intersection the location can function as a connector between the central station and historic city center improving and ensuring effortless flow of people to the city center. 

The vision aims transform the location into an integrated urban cluster seamlessly connecting with the surrounding urban context. Focusing on innovative residential typologies and introducing dynamic public functions contributing to a vibrant street life. A cohesive inner public space with well-designed transitions between public and private areas has the potential of creating comfortable and welcoming urban environment.

Stadshuisplein – Rebuild Culture

How can we, rebuild Stadhuisplein into a dynamic Cultural Quarter which integrate performance venues, honours heritage and create a pedestrian-friendly design, bridging the historic core and river-front redevelopments into one harmonious urban experience?

The Stadhuisplein area In Amersfoort Is a historically layered urban site that reflects the city’s evolution from a medieval settlement to a modern municipality. The location Is part of the protected cityscape of Amersfoort’s historic core, emphasizing Its high cultural and architectural value. 

The challenge Is to rebuild a dynamic cultural quarter Integrating cultural podiums while respecting and using the quality of its historical character and scale, that amplify the city’s social and cultural vibrancy. The area lies in the historic city center at the border of  the significant redevelopment zones along the River Eem, presenting the challenge of crafting a cultural urban district with a pedestrian friendly design that acts as a transformative link uniting these areas

Kop van Isselt – Reintegrate Old

How can we, re-purpose Kop van Isselt’s industrial heritage buildings into a vibrant mixed-use identity establishing new homes, creative industries, and lively green public spaces to foster a dynamic, sustainable urban ecosystem for Kop van Isselt?

Amersfoort is re-imagining its urban landscape to create vibrant, sustainable and inclusive growth. The transformation of the Kop van Isselt area presents an opportunity to reintegrate industrial legacy into a dynamic district. This mixed-use development envisions 2,000 to 3,000 new residences, creative industries, and public amenities, fostering a lively and sustainable urban ecosystem.

Propose bold yet practical solutions for the comprehensive transformation of this area by repurposing industrial heritage structures, integrating diverse mixed-use programs, enhancing ecological Connectivity. The goals is to create a distinctive central urban area with a renewed identity, creating vibrant public spaces that reflect adaptability and sustainability while addressing local and urban-scale needs.

Koppelbrug – Rethink Health

How can we, rethink Koppelbrug as a mix-use building complex combining indoor/outdoor sports, housing, and parking so it becomes a landmark for health, community well-being, and inclusive urban living along the River Eem?

The Koppelbrug is a cornerstone in the ambitious urban transformation of Kop van Isselt. The site offers an unique opportunity to rethink Koppelbrug as a multi-functional urban hub, skillfully blending indoor and outdoor sports facilities, residential spaces, and parking. Situated along the scenic river Eem, the area aspires to become a landmark destination for health, recreation, and community well-being.

 New proposal has the potential to create a vibrant community that promotes both active lifestyles and inclusive living by integrating 3000-3500m2 of sports facilities with 8000m2 housing program. The proposed parking hub, accommodating at least 300 cars, is designed to minimize car dependency while supporting urban logistics and enhancing the district’s appeal as a healthy and walkable urban environment.

Groenewoud, Tilburg

Dormant green suburb to future-proof living

The City of Tilburg seeks opportunities in the combination of accommodating its growth and reactivating urban life in peripheral postwar neighborhoods.

The aim is to attract and retain residents, in particular young generations, to improve the socioeconomic status, to diversify the composition of population and to stimulate healthy and productive suburban living.

Densification is part of the city’s strategy, but to make city districts like Groenewoud twenty-first century proof a new mix of functions is crucial to spark socially coherent milieus and to create solutions for the climate adaptability.

The City of Tilburg believes that the regeneration of the central area in such districts together with the local residents is key to setting climate transition in motion.

Jury comments

The jury acknowledges the high caliber of submissions in the competition, showcasing innovative approaches to urban development.

The winning project, Bricolage City (AE265), impressively integrates work and living spaces while maintaining a context-sensitive approach rooted in meticulous analysis. The harmonious densification of Groenewoud, in line with the garden city typology, demonstrates a commitment to preserving unique features and fostering resilience through strategic vegetation use.

The runner-up, Sub-urban Jungle (UR946), introduces a novel typology emphasizing the balance between private and public spaces. Its isolated islands within a green environment create an integrated landscape, although potential gentrification concerns are recognized. The project establishes a strong relationship between elements while prompting considerations about predominantly interior-focused views.

The special mention, Emerging Groenewoud (YM283), strategically employs densification, preserving green spaces and envisioning a dynamic mixed-use community. The proposed program addresses diverse community needs, with ongoing discussions about specific aspects, such as the inclusion of terraced houses atop a car park.
